Church Activities

Ham Fair

Every year Saint Andrew’s take part in the Ham Fair held on Ham Common.
Ham Fair next year will be on Saturday 9th June.

Music at Saint Andrew’s

The church choir sings at the 10.15am Parish Communion service and practises on Thursday evenings from 7.30 – 8.30pm. Harmony parts are always needed, especially tenors and basses. The choir members also perform at social events.

At Christmas and Easter people join the extended choir, which starts practising 5 or 6 weeks before Christmas and Easter for the special services. Practices are from 8.00 – 9.00pm on Thursday evenings.

There is a special men’s choir for men who do not sing harmony parts, or do not have time to come to regular practices and services. The men’s choir usually rehearse after the 30 Minute Services on first Sunday mornings of the month and often sing at the services. They are also popular at social events.

We have a band of musicians who play for the 30 Minute Services, comprising flutes, recorders, guitars, clarinet and trumpet, and occasionally violins.

Newcomers in any of these groups are very welcome. Please contact Jenny Metherell via the Parish Office.

Music Group

The Music Group is a group for enthusiastic young people playing any instrument at any level.  No grades are expected just an enjoyment in playing music.   We play at special services throughout the Church calendar, for example Christmas and Easter, and any other times we are asked to play.  We practice on a Friday evening in the Church from 5.00 – 6.30pm.   We often join in with the adults and other young people for the Advent and Christmas services.

The age range is usually from 8 – 18 years old.  Many youngsters return from University for the special services during their holidays. For more information please contact Evelyn Felton via the Parish Office.

Prayer Group

There are two Saint Andrew’s prayer groups meeting monthly, both of which are informal and open to all.

One group meets on the first Saturday of each month at the back of church, 9.00 – 9.30am. The second meets on the third Wednesday of each month in Ham from 8.00 – 9.30pm. This meeting begins with refreshments and offers a greater opportunity to share good news as well as specific prayer requests.

Sunday School

Saint Andrew’s has a lively Sunday school. We take children from the age of three and parents are encouraged to stay with the children until they get used to the routine.

The children enter the hall at about 10.30am after the ‘children’s slot’ at the beginning of the 10.15 service. After a few minutes worship time, the children move into three groups: Bubbles in the room at the back of the hall for the pre-school and reception class children; Splash! in the hall for Year 1 and 2 and Xstream for Key Stage 2. All children usually have the same lesson, at different levels, as the teachers follow the Scripture Union ‘Light’ material. Each session usually consists of an introductory activity, a Bible story and this is followed by related activities which are often either art or craft work. The oldest children are involved in more challenging discussion and how to apply what has been learned to their own lives.

Our team are conscientious and experienced. The Sunday School meets on three or four Sundays each month as the 30 Minute Service takes place on the first Sunday. After the learning session, we all sing together and then the children are provided with a drink and a biscuit which is when parents come into the hall to collect them.

A Nativity Service is presented to the church just before Christmas each year with full costumes and ‘acting’. Social events are arranged throughout the year – Epiphany Party in January, barbecue and sports in July, craft mornings usually at Easter and in October and in the recent past Family Fun evenings.

A recent chat to lots of parents showed that they are very satisfied with the Sunday School and believe that it gives the children a good basis for their faith, provides continuity and security as well as fun and enjoyment.
